Speech on Cuba

Dr. Laima Andrikiene, MEP
Urgency debate: CUBA
EP plenary session
Strasbourg, June 21, 2007

The Council recently has recognised that no tangible results have been achieved on human rights in Cuba, even despite the goodwill shown by the Council in 2005.

Majority of us if not all, share the position that it is necessary for Cuba to launch a process of political transition to multi-party democracy. And this is not a euro-centric position our opponents like to use against us. That is about universality and indivisibility of human rights, including civil, political, economic rights, and that is what we believe in.

Today again we urge the Council and the Commission to continue to take whatever action is necessary in order to demand the release of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience.

It is important to give our unconditional support and full encouragement to launching a peaceful process of transition to a multi-party democracy in Cuba, and we have examples to follow. Just think about present EU Member States from Eastern and Central Europe, who (taking into account many aspects including human rights situation) 20 years ago where in a similar situation like Cuba is now.

I hope that soon we will be witnessing very important changes in Cuba, and I look forward to that very special day.
