On the events organized by the
European Business & Parliament Scheme
Second Ordinary Plenary Session of the EUROLAT
Lima, Peru

April 30, 2008

BBVA Banco Continental (Breakfast on April 30, 2008)

I found this meeting extremely useful for the following reasons:

1) Macroeconomic situation of Peru was presented not by the government officials or experts from outside the country, but by the foreign company (investor) working in the country for a number of years.

2) The presentation by the representative of the BBVA Banco Continental was very professional, objective and informative.

3) Issues which were not addressed in the original presentation were raised later on, i.e. when MEPs had a possibility to ask questions or when they requested additional clarification, information, etc.

4) As there were only 5 MEPs present (all - from the EPP-ED Group), we had enough time for questions and answers. The atmosphere of the meeting was very friendly and frank.

SUEZ (Lunch on April 30, 2008)

This meeting was also very good though very different from the previous one:

1) The presentation was not on energy cooperation between EU and Latin America, i.e. opportunities, challenges, future perspectives (at least, what I was expecting from Suez). The presentation was a company profile and introduction of the projects Suez is involved in Peru. The presentation also addressed needs of Peruvian market in the field of electricity, Suez projects in progress as well as plans for the future.

2) There were many questions from the MEPs covering different aspects including broader issues like attitude of the Government of Peru towards foreign investors, perspectives of EU-Latin America energy cooperation and many others.

Overall evaluation of European Business & Parliament Scheme events in Lima, Peru: very well organized, informative, extremely useful especially for those MEPs who came to Peru for the first time.

I am grateful to the EBPS for organizing this kind of programme for me in Peru.
