Values and Politics. Laima Andrikienė MEP

The international conference 'Values and Politics', initiated by Laima Andrikienė MEP (EPP-ED, LT), takes place in Vilnius on 11-12 May.

The conference will discuss the relation between values and politics in the post-modern society. Other topics on the agenda include common European values, Christian values and a Constitution for the EU, values and politics, cooperation between policy-shapers, policy-makers and the Church as well as the Christian values and freedom of press, communication of values in the post-modern society.

"The topic of this conference is no doubt wider than one political tendency or state borders. This topic is very relevant in Lithuania and across the EU where values are subordinate to political interests. There is plenty of cynicism in the political process and departure from the principles of moral policy", declared Laima Andrikienė.

In his speech, the Cardinal of Lithuania, Audrys Juozas Bačkis, said: "We have been in Europe for many centuries. Now we want to say out loud that we want to be here. In Europe, respect for human rights, social justice and solidarity, freedom of consciousness, equality before the law, and government service to the people, all had Christian roots. European countries are unifying for the better defence of our ideals, that they are not pushed aside by conflicts among the states, as it was in the XX century. Being a part of the European Union, we will be more successful in defending our rights, in proclaiming our experience and traditions."

The conference is being held with the participation of the Prime Minister of Lithuania, Gediminas Kirkilas, Cardinal Audrys Juozas Bačkis, Vice-Chairman of the European Parliament, Mario Mauro MEP, as well as leaders of political parties, dignitaries of the Catholic Church and other religious communities, Members of the Lithuanian and European Parliaments, journalists, scientists, representatives of non-governmental and youth organisations, and members of the diplomatic corps.

One of the participants, the Chairman of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science, Paulius Subačius, said: "In old and modern times, it was the public, consistent, and factual understanding of values that was the motivation for the most important political decisions. Our post-modern era today denies and even ridicules this motivation."

"I hope that our joint work at this conference is interesting for its participants. Furthermore, the ideas and thoughts which will be heard here will become an impulse to apply values, and not to implement policies based on short-term interests. Moreover, it will offer a great opportunity to improve our methods of communication of values", said Laima Andrikienė.

The conference has been organised by the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Stifftung, Robert Schuman Foundation and FAES.
